Our Story

After dealing with serious waterborne illness first hand, we decided to dedicate our lives to giving safe water to those in need. We founded GROSCHE in our basement in 2006 with visions of a social enterprise that could change the world. We use the profits from the sale of our coffee, tea, and hydration products to fund the GROSCHE Safe Water Project. The Safe Water Project gives community members access to safe drinking water by installing Biosand water filters in remote and poor locations.  We have funded over 150 Million days of safe water in the past 12 years. Now we have set a bold goal of reaching 300 Million days of safe water for those in need by the end of 2022.    Helmi & Mehreen  Co Founders

 

 

 

To date we have installed 2,184 biosand water filters in six countries. 

We started our safe water projects in 2010 in Africa. Today we are working in six countries: South Sudan, Uganda, Malawi, India, Pakistan, and The Philippines. To see an interactive map of our water purification installations click here

 

THE SAFE WATER PROJECT

Creates Employment & Builds Skills

We chose biosand water filters because they are ideally suited to purify water in the most remote and poor areas that have unsafe water. These filters require little to no maintenance, and are made of cement, sand, gravel, and clay. They don’t need any electricity, chemicals, or replacement filter cartridges, and last up to 30 years. They are ideally suited for warm temperate climates and are made locally – creating employment and skill in the areas that need it most. Learn more in the video below!

 

  

How is the water purified? 

 

1. Protective Lid

 

2. Diffuser Plate: Keeps bio layer undisturbed when water is being added

 

3. Bio Layer: Micro organisms eat incoming pathogens, treating the water

 

4. Fine Sand: Filters solid particles, traps/kills viruses, bacteria and worms
